Abstract:While existing studies examine how structural holes or closure networks independently affect organizational innovation performance, this body of work remains constrained by static and singular perspectives. The temporal dynamics of network structure transition in R&D collaborations are investigated in this study. We propose that organizations strategically transition between structural hole and closure networks across different innovation phases, creating an ambidextrous network transition pattern. Through longitudinal network analysis of 784 U.S. biopharmaceutical firms' patent collaboration sequences over 15 years starting in 1998 using optimal matching analysis, we propose that firms with a high degree of transition between structural holes and closure networks achieve greater exploratory innovation but at the expense of exploitative innovation. Furthermore, we investigate two partners’ network characteristics— tie stability and network status—and their moderating effects on these relationships. Our dynamic network configurational perspective offers novel insights that advance network research, innovation literature, and practice.
