Abstract:Under the “dual carbon” goals, institutional pressure serves as a crucial pathway to driving the improvement of green innovation quality in manufacturing enterprises. Based on data from China"s A-share manufacturing listed companies from 2015 to 2023, this study analyzes the impact mechanisms of three types of institutional pressure—government pressure, market pressure, and social pressure—on the green innovation quality of manufacturing enterprises. The research finds that all three types of institutional pressure significantly enhance the green innovation quality of manufacturing enterprises, and the conclusions remain robust after a series of tests. Heterogeneity analysis reveals that institutional pressure has a more pronounced effect on enterprises with high digital transformation levels, non-heavy pollution, high green innovation quality, and low environmental regulation. Mechanism testing indicates that institutional pressure can improve green innovation quality by enhancing corporate strategic flexibility and executives" environmental awareness, with the mediating effect of executives" environmental awareness being significantly stronger than that of corporate strategic flexibility. Based on the analysis of the regulatory effects of heterogeneous environmental policies, it is found that both the environmental protection target responsibility system and the low-carbon city pilot policy positively regulate the promoting effect of three institutional pressures on the green innovation quality of manufacturing enterprises, while the carbon emission trading pilot policy can only strengthen the innovation driving effect of government pressure and social pressure. The research conclusion provides empirical experience to reveal the impact mechanism of institutional pressure on the quality of green innovation in enterprises, and also provides decision-making reference for the high-quality development of the manufacturing industry.
